When you start planning your senior session, one of the first questions I usually get is:
“Where should we go for photos?”
And here’s the honest truth…
📸 Location matters—but it’s not everything.
The real focus of your senior photos? YOU.
Your personality, your smile, your style, and the energy you bring to the shoot. The location? That’s just the backdrop—it sets the vibe, but it shouldn’t steal the show.
That said, there are a few things to keep in mind when picking a spot that helps bring everything together.
🌿 Look for Variety in Texture
What makes a location really shine in your final gallery isn’t how “cool” it looks—it’s the variety it gives us to work with.
Think about spots that offer different textures or layers, like:
- Brick or stone walls 🧱
- Old staircases or doorways 🚪
- Water (like a pond, river, or fountain) 💧
- Flower beds or tall grasses 🌸
- Trees, pathways, fences, or even open skies 🌳🌾
When a location has a mix of natural and man-made elements, it gives us more options—so your photos feel dynamic, not repetitive.
👗 Outfits Matter More Than You Think
Here’s a little pro tip: your outfit will stand out more than your background.
I always recommend focusing first on your wardrobe—choose colors and styles that feel most like you. We’ll make sure your outfits and the location complement each other (not compete).
Not sure what to wear? I’ve got you— I have a blog post on this and send a comprehensive style guide when you book with me!
🗺️ Think About Meaning (Not Just Aesthetic)
A location doesn’t have to be “Instagram-famous” to be perfect. Some of my favorite sessions have been at:
- A family farm or backyard
- A favorite park from childhood
- Your high school stadium or gym
- A coffee shop or downtown corner that just feels you
If the location means something to you, the photos will feel that much more personal and memorable.
☀️ Lighting > Location
Another secret? Light matters more than scenery.
The right light can make even a simple sidewalk look dreamy. That’s why I always schedule sessions around golden hour (just before sunset!)—no matter where we are, that soft glow works magic.
Let’s Make It Easy
Not sure where to start? I’ve scouted tons of spots across central Illinois and beyond, and I’d love to help you choose the right one based on your vision, style, and outfits. Whether you want something modern, natural, urban, or totally unique, indoor or outdoor - I’ve got ideas for all of it.
Because at the end of the day—the best location is the one that lets YOU shine.
