Some senior sessions are beautiful because of the location. Others are beautiful because of the memories tied to it. Audrey’s Class of 2027 senior session had both.
Instead of choosing a traditional senior picture location, we photographed her session on her family’s own grounds—a place where they have spent many summers together. That made the evening feel especially personal from the very beginning. We weren’t simply finding a pretty backdrop for her senior photos; we were documenting this milestone in a place that already held years of memories for her family.
And by the end of the evening, I was so glad we decided to stay with our original plan.
A senior session in a place filled with memories
The property offered everything I love about an outdoor senior session in Central Illinois. We had tall grasses, open prairie fields, wildflowers, and plenty of natural space to explore. Because the location was meaningful to Audrey and her family, every part of the session felt a little more personal.
We started by wandering through the grasses and prairie, using the natural landscape to create a variety of senior pictureswithout ever feeling like we were trying too hard to find the next backdrop. The wildflowers added beautiful pops of color, while the tall grasses gave the images that soft, natural texture I love so much.
There is something special about photographing seniors in places that already feel like home. Instead of simply saying, “This is where we took your senior pictures,” Audrey will always be able to look back and remember the summers, family memories, and time spent on these grounds.
Outfits that brought three different looks
Audrey also brought a great variety of outfits, which allowed us to create a gallery with three completely different feels.
She started in a simple white top and jeans, giving us a classic, casual look that worked beautifully with the natural scenery. This is always one of my favorite combinations for senior picture outfit ideas because it is timeless and lets the location and personality shine.
Next, she changed into a beautiful white dress with floral details. The dress felt perfectly at home among the wildflowers and prairie grasses and gave us a softer, more feminine look.
For her final outfit, Audrey chose a colorful maxi skirt, and I don't think we could have picked a better look for what was waiting for us at the lake.
The sunset we almost missed
One of the biggest decisions of the evening happened before we even started photographing.
Rain was in the forecast, and we went back and forth about whether we should reschedule Audrey’s session. When you’re planning Class of 2027 senior pictures, the weather can make things a little complicated, especially when you're hoping for that perfect summer evening.
Ultimately, we decided to go for it—and I am so glad we did.
As the evening progressed, the clouds that had made us question the forecast began working completely in our favor. When we made our way toward the lake, the sky started to transform.
The clouds caught the setting sun and created the most incredible colors over the water. Audrey’s colorful maxi skirt was the perfect contrast against the sky, making those final images some of my absolute favorites from her entire session.
Sometimes the weather you think might ruin your photos ends up creating the photos you couldn't have planned.
The clouds gave the sunset dimension and color, and the reflection over the lake made the entire scene feel almost surreal. It was one of those evenings where you just have to stop and appreciate how perfectly everything came together.
Why I love meaningful senior picture locations
As a photographer, I love finding beautiful locations for my seniors, but sessions like Audrey’s remind me that the most meaningful locations aren't always the ones everyone else is using.
A family property. A favorite summer spot. A place filled with memories.
Those locations can make senior pictures feel even more personal because the images become connected to something beyond the session itself.
Audrey’s evening had all the things I love about a summer senior session—beautiful outfits, wildflowers, tall grasses, open fields, and an incredible sunset—but what made it truly special was that we were documenting this season of her life somewhere that already meant so much to her family.
Class of 2027, your senior session can be personal
When you start planning your Class of 2027 senior session, don't feel like you have to choose the location everyone else is using. Think about the places that mean something to you. Maybe it's a family property, a favorite summer destination, a downtown you've always loved, or simply somewhere that feels like you.
Your senior pictures should tell your story.
And sometimes, the most beautiful stories happen when you take a chance on the weather, follow the light, and end up standing beside a lake watching the sky put on a show.
