Every senior session tells a story, and that's one of the reasons I love what I do so much. Each senior brings their own personality, interests, and experiences, which means no two sessions ever feel exactly alike. Grace's Class of 2027 senior session was no exception. It was an evening filled with beautiful scenery, meaningful details, and quiet moments that reminded me just how important photographs can become over time.


We spent the evening exploring two of my favorite outdoor locations in Central Illinois: Sangamon River Forest Preserveand Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. Together, these locations offered so much variety while keeping the focus exactly where it belonged—on Grace and this exciting season of her life.


Two beautiful locations that complement each other


One of the things I love about longer senior sessions is the opportunity to visit multiple locations. Each place brings a different feel to the gallery, giving seniors a collection of images that feel both diverse and cohesive.

We began at Sangamon River Forest Preserve, where the tall prairie grasses and wildflowers created the perfect backdrop for a summer senior session. This location is one of my favorite recommendations for Class of 2027 senior pictures because it feels peaceful and untouched. The open prairie allows the landscape to stretch endlessly around you, while the wildflowers and natural greenery add texture and color without distracting from the senior.


As the evening continued, we made our way to Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. One of the things that makes this location so special is the lake. As the sun began to set, the water reflected the warm golden light, creating a completely different atmosphere from where we had started. Ending a session by the water during golden hour is always one of my favorite ways to finish the evening because the light becomes incredibly soft and flattering, giving every image a timeless feel.


Thoughtful outfit choices create a beautiful gallery


Grace came prepared with three outfits that each brought something unique to her gallery.


She began in a beautiful pink maxi dress that paired perfectly with the prairie fields and wildflowers. The soft color looked gorgeous surrounded by all the natural greenery and gave her portraits an elegant, romantic feel.

For her second outfit, she changed into a purple top with jeans. I always encourage seniors to think about how color interacts with their surroundings, and this outfit was a perfect example of why. Rich jewel tones—especially shades of purple—create beautiful contrast against green landscapes, making the images feel vibrant while still looking timeless.


While each outfit was beautiful, the final dress Grace wore carried a meaning that went far beyond style.

It belonged to her mom, Brooke.


Having multiple outfits that vary in color, style, and level of dressiness is one of the easiest ways to create a gallery that feels complete. Each look reflects a different side of your personality, and together they create so much more variety than repeating the same style throughout an entire session.


Why I love photographing seniors in nature


Outdoor locations like Sangamon River Forest Preserve and Middle Fork River Forest Preserve continue to be some of my favorites for natural senior pictures because they never compete with the person in front of the camera.


The tall grasses move with the breeze. The prairie flowers bloom differently each season. The lake changes with the evening light. Nature provides beautiful surroundings while allowing every senior's personality to remain the center of attention.
