There’s something really special about getting to photograph siblings.
Years ago, I had the privilege of photographing Payton’s older sister as one of my senior team members, so when Payton reached out for her own Class of 2027 senior pictures, it felt like such a full-circle moment. Even better, her sister came along for the session, which gave us the chance to catch up while celebrating another exciting milestone for their family.
Those are the kinds of connections I treasure most. Watching families come back year after year is one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive, and getting to see these girls grow into such incredible young women made this session even more meaningful.
Why Sangamon River Forest Preserve is a hidden gem for senior pictures

One of the things I love most about this location is how much variety it offers without having to travel from place to place.
Throughout Payton's session, we explored:
wide open fields

colorful wildflowers
winding sidewalks
beautiful greenery throughout the preserve
Each area creates a completely different look while still keeping that peaceful, natural feel that so many seniors love.
Whether you're hoping for bright summer colors or a softer, nature-inspired backdrop, this location has something beautiful around every corner. Choosing outfits that complement the scenery. Payton absolutely nailed her outfit choices.
She started the session wearing a deep purple off-the-shoulder top paired with jeans, and I immediately loved how rich the color looked against all of the summer greenery.
Sometimes seniors worry they need to wear neutral colors, but this is proof that choosing a bold color can actually make your photos stand out even more. The deep purple added just the right amount of contrast while still feeling timeless.
Later, she changed into a long floral dress that fit the setting perfectly.
As we walked through the tall grasses and wildflowers, the dress brought such a soft, romantic feel to the images and gave her gallery an entirely different look.
One of my favorite pieces of advice when planning what to wear for senior pictures is to choose outfits that reflect different sides of your personality. A casual outfit paired with something a little dressier gives your gallery variety while still feeling completely authentic to you.
The beauty of slowing down
One of my favorite things about photographing at Sangamon River Forest Preserve is that it naturally encourages you to slow down.
Instead of rushing from one spot to another, we took our time walking the sidewalks, stopping whenever the light caught the grasses just right or when a patch of wildflowers caught our attention.
Some of my favorite images often come from those unplanned moments. The places you weren't expecting. The little pockets of light that you simply stumble upon.
That's one of the reasons I love photographing in natural spaces so much. Every session feels unique because nature is always changing. No two galleries are ever exactly alike.
Creating a senior session that feels personal
One thing I always hope for is that every senior leaves with a gallery that truly reflects who they are.
Not just beautiful images—but photos that feel personal.
For Payton, that meant celebrating this exciting season surrounded by the beauty of Central Illinois while also sharing the experience with someone who has already walked this road before. Having her sister there made the evening even more special. There were moments of encouragement, shared memories, and plenty of laughter in between photos. It reminded me just how meaningful these milestones are—not only for the senior but for the entire family. As a photographer, getting to witness those relationships is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
